Ordinarily, the fact that the Nets and Cam Thomas have yet to reach an agreement on an extension of his rookie contract shouldn’t be a source of panic.
$30M is ridiculous for a player who doesn't play D or pass. And don't tell me "that's what the market pays." Another team's mistake shouldn't be repeated.
Sign your tender, if you play well you'll get paid by someone. If not, then obviously the market was correct.
Ideally it’s a descending value three year deal (third year player option).
Maybe $30 mn this year (Nets have to have to spend anyway to make the cap floor) and goes to something like $26 mn on year two and $22 in year three? AAV would be $26 mn.
Allows Cam to bet on himself these next two seasons and the Nets to ride the rookie contract waive in years one and two of the deal.
I am a Cam fan. Not many bucket getters like him. He puts fans in the arena and he really did do better passing out of double teams and distributing in general last year.
With the Porter for CJ trade, the cap floor is not really a concern. Just speculating, but the Nets could be lowballing here because of dry market for him. Otherwise, we probably would have received a leak on a new deal. I highly doubt Thomas will get $30 mil this season when no one else is bidding. Most Nets fans adore Cam but the rest of the league is polarized. He's gotten better at playmaking, but he still should be averaging about 5 assists per game by accident based on how much he dominates the ball. If he feels disrespected, he should do a prove-it year and then free himself.
4 years for $100 mil is the highest I’ve seen as a possibility. I’ve seen more 2-3 years at $17-20 mil per year. The Nets cannot sign CT to a deal that will be considered negative value. Even a 1+1 should only be at an annual amount that a potential trade partner would reasonably be able and willing to match. I’d put that number at $20 mil tops.

He won't get $30 million, nor will he agree to play for his qualifying offer. There is a middle ground.

I doubt Nets offer less than a $20 million AAV, but no one has leaked the negotiations, so who knows?
